When you hear the name Michael Jackson, what's the first song that pops into your head? My bet's on "Billie Jean." It's a classic, a cultural touchstone, and an absolute, undeniable hit. This phenomenon isn't unique to the King of Pop; many musical legends have that one track that eclipses the rest of their incredible catalogs. Think Green Day and "Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)," Adele and "Rolling in the Deep," Lynyrd Skynyrd and "Sweet Home Alabama," or The Police and "Every Breath You Take." These songs are fantastic, ingrained in our collective memory, and universally beloved.

They're also extremely overplayed!

It's precisely why some music venues, especially piano bars, have a "premium" charge for these "chart-toppers," knowing they're almost guaranteed requests night after night. So, I'm embarking on a new blog series. My mission? To dig deeper into the discographies of these iconic artists and unearth those hidden gems or equally brilliant tracks that often get overshadowed by their monolithic singles. And who better to kick things off with than the iconic hitmakers of power ballads and arena rock, Journey?

Journey has released 14 studio albums with 60 singles and a total catalog of over 150 songs; so there are a lot of other options out there. But as with all artists, not every song is a hit, and more than likely, a piano bar singer's going to have somewhere between 4-12 Journey tunes in their repertoire list. "Don't Stop Believin'" will obviously be at the top, but there are quite a few others that get a decent amount of play. I'm going to provide a list of other options (in no particular order). So, let's get started!

Upbeat Songs

Any Way You Want It - Departure (1980)

This high-energy track is pure, unadulterated rock and roll. From the moment the iconic guitar riff kicks in, you know you're in for a good time. It's got that classic Journey sing-along chorus that gets the crowd hyped, and the driving beat makes you want to get up and move. It's a fantastic alternative to "Don't Stop Believin'" when you want that unmistakable Journey sound with a shot of adrenaline.

Separate Ways (Worlds Apart) - Frontiers (1983)

Talk about an anthem! "Separate Ways" is a powerful, dramatic rock song that perfectly showcases Steve Perry's incredible vocal range and the band's tight musicianship. The synth intro is instantly recognizable, and the lyrics about a crumbling relationship resonate with many. It's a fantastic choice for a piano bar because it's got that undeniable energy and a chorus that everyone loves to belt out.

Anyway - Departure (1980)

Not to be confused with "Any Way You Want It," this lesser-known gem from Departure is a fantastic, upbeat track that still delivers that classic Journey feel. It's got a great rhythm and a catchy melody that will have you tapping your foot. While it might not be as universally known as some of their other hits, it's a solid, feel-good rock song that deserves more recognition.

Stone in Love - Escape (1981)

From the iconic Escape album, "Stone in Love" is a rock staple. It's got a driving beat, a memorable guitar riff, and another stellar vocal performance from Steve Perry. The song embodies that classic 80s rock sound that Journey perfected, making it a perfect choice for a high-energy moment at the piano bar. It's a crowd-pleaser that doesn't get overplayed like its album-mate.

Ask the Lonely - Frontiers (1983)

This powerful ballad-rock hybrid from Frontiers features a soaring chorus and passionate vocals from Steve Perry. While it starts a bit slower, it builds into a classic Journey power ballad that will have the audience raising their lighters (or phone flashlights!). It’s got that emotional punch without being a tear-jerker, making it a great option for a more reflective yet still impactful moment.

Wheel in the Sky - Infinity (1978)

One of Journey's earliest and most enduring hits, "Wheel in the Sky" captures the essence of life on the road and the longing for home. Starting with a gentle acoustic guitar and building to a powerful, soaring chorus, it's a testament to the band's evolving sound and Steve Perry's unmistakable vocals. This song perfectly balances rock energy with heartfelt emotion, making it a powerful addition to any setlist.

Slower Songs

Open Arms - Escape (1981)

Undoubtedly one of Journey's most beloved ballads, "Open Arms" is a quintessential power ballad that showcases Steve Perry's emotive vocals. It's a beautiful, heartfelt song about reconciliation and finding your way back to love. While it's a slow song, its widespread popularity and emotional depth make it a frequent and welcome request at any piano bar. It's a timeless classic that always resonates with an audience.

Faithfully - Frontiers (1983)

Another iconic power ballad, "Faithfully" is a heartfelt ode to the struggles and dedication of life on the road. Steve Perry's vocals are once again a highlight, conveying a deep sense of longing and commitment. It's a slow burn that builds to a powerful and emotionally charged chorus, making it a perfect choice for those moments when you want to feel something deeply.

Lights - Infinity (1978)

A true classic that predates their biggest arena rock hits, "Lights" is a nostalgic and evocative song about the beauty of San Francisco. It's got a more mellow, almost melancholic feel, but its heartfelt lyrics and beautiful melody make it a fan favorite. It's a great option for a quieter moment, allowing the audience to appreciate the band's earlier, more subtle artistry.

Romantic Songs

Lovin', Touchin', Squeezin' - Evolution (1979)

While it has a bit of a bluesy, rocking edge, "Lovin', Touchin', Squeezin'" tells a story of heartbreak and betrayal, making it a surprisingly poignant romantic (or anti-romantic) song. The iconic chorus and the call-and-response vocals make it incredibly fun to sing along to, even with its underlying sadness. It's a great choice for when you want something with a bit more bite than a straightforward love song.

Who's Crying Now - Escape (1981)

This power ballad delves into the aftermath of a broken relationship, exploring the pain and confusion when love fades. Steve Perry's vocals are incredibly raw and emotional, capturing the essence of heartache. Despite its somber theme, the song's beautiful melody and powerful instrumentation make it a compelling choice for a piano bar, allowing for a moment of shared reflection on the complexities of love.

Honorable Mention

Oh Sherrie - Street Talk (1984) - Steve Perry Solo

While not technically a Journey song, "Oh Sherrie" is so intrinsically linked with the band's sound (and frontman Steve Perry's iconic voice) that it often feels like an honorary Journey track. Released on Perry's debut solo album Street Talk in 1984, this catchy and romantic hit was written for his then-girlfriend, Sherrie Swafford. With its instantly recognizable synth hook and Perry's soaring vocals, "Oh Sherrie" is a powerful and beloved 80s anthem that captured the hearts of fans worldwide.

These are just a few of their many songs. So, let me know...
